‘Sexortion’ Crimes Include Illinois Victims

LucyAn Indiana man has agreed to plead guilty to charges alleging that he trick about a dozen teenagers into stripping or performing sexual acts for him on their webcams, then proceeding to use the recordings of those sessions to coerce them into making even more explicit. These victims included teenagers from many states. Richard Finkbiner, who lives in the Brazil, Indiana, recently signed an agreement filed in federal court in Terre Haute in which he plead guilty to extortion, child exploitation and possession of child pornography. This was in exchange for a recommended sentence of 30 to 50 years in prison. U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett previously said that prosecutors intended to seek an effective life sentence if a jury had convicted Finkbiner. Prosecutors said that Finkbiner met his mostly male victims in online chat rooms. The teens believed that they were viewing live images of people, which included a couple at one point, who were acting in a sexual manor and were encourages the teenagers to do the same. The images, however, were actually just recordings that Finkbiner was showing them. Later, he would  contact the teens again and threaten to upload the images to various porn websites if they did not participate in making more videos for Finkbiner’s personal use. All of the alleged victims are between the ages of 12 and 16. According to prosecutors, Finkbiner victimized children in many states including Indiana, West Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, Michigan, Illinois and Colorado. This case is an example of “sextortion,” said prosecutors. Crime authorities reported that they are seeing these crimes, in which Internet predators catch victims in embarrassing situations online and threaten to expose them if they do not create sexually explicit photos or videos, in much higher frequency.
