According to a Chicago Tribune story, the DuPage County State’s Attorney charged the former president of the Wheaton North High School booster club with stealing nearly $11,000 from funds that were earmarked to support students’ extracurricular activities. The 57-year-old woman allegedly took cash advances from a booster club-issued American Express credit card of almost $11,000, and then withdrew more than $9,800 from a club bank account in order to pay off the credit card cash advances. ST 03.13.13 Law Office of Glenn M. Sowa, LLCThe woman served as booster club president from May, 2006 until May, 2011. She began taking cash advances between July and November of 2012. Other club officials noticed the financial discrepancies late last year, and notified Wheaton police. Authorities state that the woman used the Wheaton North Booster Club as her own “personal fundraiser.” The woman is facing one count of theft of over $10,000 in DuPage County. She was released following her arrest after posting $5,000 bail. Theft charges, especially when they involve a significant amount of money, can have very serious consequences for the accused and his or her family. Depending on the circumstances, theft can result in a felony conviction under Illinois law, jail time, and an order for restitution, which means that the woman in this case could be ordered to pay back the money that she allegedly stole from the booster club. Since the potential consequences are so severe, it is always wise to contact a qualified Naperville criminal defense attorney as quickly as possible after criminal charges are filed against you. With the help of a defense attorney, you can immediately begin mounting a strong defense against these charges, and hopefully minimize the potential consequences of a theft conviction.
